About the Clinical Educator Programme
If you teach University of Edinburgh medical undergraduates, then our Clinical Educator Programme (CEP) is for you. CEP is a free* programme of workshops and online modules focused on medical education. All our workshops are CPD accredited by the Royal Colleges.
It is informal and interactive training that will help make sure your teaching is as effective and engaging as it can be.
As part of the CEP you can:
● learn a range of teaching techniques
● take part in group discussions
● have your teaching observed and get feedback on it
● get support to help you reflect on your teaching practice
* The Programme is free of charge for anyone who teaches in South East Scotland or who teaches University of Edinburgh medical students outwith South East Scotland.
How the CEP is structured
The 4 levels of the CEP build on one another. So you can use the workshops that you completed for the Introductory Level towards Level 1, Level 1 towards Level 2 and so on. Completion of the Introduction Level is not required before completing Levels 1, 2 or 3.
Completing the CEP
The CEP is flexible. You can complete the whole Programme, or select the workshops that are most relevant to you. Our workshops are delivered throughout the year at venues across South East Scotland.
You will have 5 years to complete the Programme up to level 2. However, you can do this within 12 months.
How to register for the CEP
How to book workshops
Use the Tutorial Booking System (TuBS) to find and book workshops. You will need to select the CEP as one of your groups, then select an appropriate role.
You will be given access to online modules which cover some of the Framework Areas. We are not responsible for these modules. If you complete them, please send us copies of your certificates so we can ensure the evidence on your records is up to date.
Recognition of prior learning
If you have attended a course in the past 3 years which you think is similar to any part of our Programme, we may be able to recognise it as prior learning towards the CEP.
We can recognise most clinical education workshops and online modules. Some examples are:
● Faculty Development Alliance and Royal Colleges Teach the Trainer or Train the Trainer courses
● the Edinburgh Summer School in Clinical Education (ESSCE)
Send copies or scans of your completion certificate to us at email@example.com.
If you are not sure if the workshops or modules you have done would be recognised by us, just ask.
Revalidation of the Clinical Educator Programme
Your Introductory Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 certification is valid for 5 years after you complete it.
To maintain your CEP status you must revalidate every 5 years.
Go to the Revalidation page for details of what is involved for the different levels.
You should be collecting evidence of the educational activities you have been involved in, and recording it on SOAR (Scottish Online Appraisal Resource) on an ongoing basis.
What participants have told us about CEP
"Thank you for the broad spectrum of skills I have improved on due to your excellent workshops"
"The Clinical Educator Programme is a great resource, which has allowed me to become a better educator."
"I would again like to pass on my congratulations to the CEP team for such a great program. I have found it of an exemplary quality throughout and would fully recommend to all my colleagues"
"how lucky NHS Lothian employees are to have such a good, free, local programme that does exactly what is required by the GMC. I found my TOF session really beneficial"
"Thanks so much for coming out to Fife and observing my teaching session. Thanks also for the feedback and genuine interest in my teaching. This really is a wonderful system that has been created in South East Scotland and we are very lucky to have your input"
Regarding teaching observations - "Thank you for your positive and constructive comments – and your general enthusiasm. I found the whole experience much more pleasurable than I was expecting!"
"I would just like to say what a positive experience I have found the Level 2 CEP. To be honest I was slightly cynical feeling that a Masters completed x years ago should be sufficient. I was wrong. I hope that there are sufficient resources to continue to offer feedback on teaching events. That was the high point for me and I can say that your feedback did give me new insights"
